Cushions are the most important parts of any living room set as they determine how comfortable you will be while spending time on it. Foam is applied in layers and glued together with a small layer of batting separating the actual upholstery and the layer of foam. There are many different firmness levels of foam cushions, and it is impossible to predict without a manufacturer's note or without actually sitting on one. Firmness is achieved by adding more foam and taking out air and vice-versa for softness. Again, keep in mind that most sofas are medium firm.

Some companies add a set of springs below foam for extra comfort, but with new technological advances in foam it is very unnecessary and makes the sets heavier and more complicated. It is, of course, inevitable that your cushions will start to get flatter and firmer over the course of a few years, so it is smarter to invest in higher quality furniture or prepare to shell out a lot of money for custom replacement cushions.
